Republicans seek power. The welfare of the country isn't even secondary. It's somewhere far down the list behind ideology, profitability, low taxes regardless of the effect and a host of other self-serving interests.

A politicians first duty is to be reelected and if McConnell (or any other Republican) opposed the GOP candidate on the ticket it's a given that they'd be voted out.

This is like Grabem's "fine people" speech about Charlottesville. Johnson forgets this mob of fine people had already broken the law, killed a policemen, injured hundreds of others and were busy looting the Capitol.
