Sarkozy: Former French president sentenced to jail for corruption

French ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to three years in jail, two of them suspended, for corruption.

The 66-year-old was found guilty of trying to bribe a magistrate by offering him a prestigious job in return for information about a separate criminal case against Sarkozy.

He is the first former French president to receive a custodial sentence.

The magistrate and Sarkozy's former lawyer got similar sentences. All three defendants are expected to appeal.

In the ruling, the judge in Paris said Sarkozy could serve a year at home with an electronic tag, rather than go to prison.

The conservative politician "knew what [he] was doing was wrong", the judge said, adding that his actions and those of his lawyer had given the public "a very bad image of justice".

The crimes were specified as influence-peddling and violation of professional secrecy.

Trump will get nothing other than monetary penalties if found guilty.

Perhaps but they are looking into his tax records as well as the second set of books he used for bank loans so that's potentially both tax evasion and bank fraud. Then there's the unexplained wealth order in the UK. And money laundering. And his phone call to Georgia. And his inciting a riot on the 6th. And then ....

On the monetary side, in addition to any fines don't forget that Deutsche Bank may well call his loans.

When Deutsche Bank does that I think you'll see the Trump "empire" start collapsing like a house of cards.

DB has already stated that they will not be doing any future loans with DT.

that means that when these come due, he will have to find some other corrupt institution to bankroll his very expensive loan portfolio. it won't go well for him.

He's no longer useful to Putin so Russia is out. And most of the rest of the major banks won't deal with him - reputational issues aside, they know he's a terrible credit risk so why loan him money?

All these investigations don't make his organization a credible risk either.

which wouldn't necessarily matter, if you are a criminal enterprise like DB.

but even criminal enterprises have their limits.
