Reading the article over it may be that she was in total denial. Showing any empathy for the Floyd family may be subconsciously a way to avoid having to deal with the reality of her son's behavior.

Minnesota Troopers Deleted Texts and Emails After Floyd Protests, Major Testifies
According to a transcript released Friday, a member of the Minnesota State Patrol said there was “a purge of emails and text messages” after troopers responded to protests in Minneapolis last year.

Minnesota State Patrol troopers deleted text messages and emails shortly after responding to protests that erupted over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year, according to a major who testified in federal court in July.

The testimony was included in court documents that were released on Friday as part of a lawsuit that the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota filed last year on behalf of journalists who said they had been assaulted by law enforcement officers while covering the protests.

“The purge was neither accidental, automated nor routine,” lawyers with the A.C.L.U. said in a court memo on Friday, adding that no one had been able to review the deleted communications to see if they might have been relevant to the case.

“The absence of both contemporaneous communications and documentation makes it nearly impossible to track the State Patrol’s behavior, apparently by design,” the memo added.

During a hearing on July 28, Maj. Joseph J. Dwyer testified that he and other state troopers deleted their emails and texts shortly after responding to the unrest, and that he believed that “a vast majority” of troopers had done so.

Kevin C. Riach, a lawyer working with the A.C.L.U. on the case, questioned Major Dwyer during the hearing. “There was a purge of records at the State Patrol immediately after the George Floyd protests,” he said. “Is that correct?”

“There was a purge of emails and text messages, correct,” Major Dwyer responded, according to ...

After George Floyd’s murder, some New York City firefighters shared racist messages mocking his death. They gloated about how police could "legally shoot Black children." After Black firefighters complained, officials quietly suspended nine firefighters.

The Fire Department has long faced allegations of discrimination. But after George Floyd’s murder, a thread of racist messages ignited new concerns about the department’s racial climate.

Exclusive: Derek Chauvin jurors speak out for the first time, recalling 'traumatic experience' and that light-bulb moment
By Ray Sanchez

Months after convicting the former Minneapolis Police officer who murdered George Floyd, jurors describe the trial as a life-altering experience that still haunts them.

It was their first and only interview since finding Derek Chauvin guilty in April of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Seven jury members told CNN's Don Lemon their verdict in the most important trial of the Black Lives Matter era was based solely on the evidence, not their views on race.

The gruesome video of Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes as the Black man cried out that he couldn't breathe is seared into their minds, they said. Some have sought counseling and therapy.

"It is definitely in my spirit and it will always be there," Sherri Belton Hardeman said of the video.

"Watching George Floyd call for his mom just ...

Derek Chauvin to change plea in federal civil rights case in death of George Floyd
By Evan Perez and Adrienne Broaddus

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted in April on state murder charges for killing George Floyd, is scheduled to appear at a change of plea hearing Wednesday in the federal civil rights case against him, according to court documents.

Chauvin is accused of depriving Floyd's right to be free from "unreasonable seizure, which includes the right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a police officer."

Chauvin pleaded not guilty to the charges in September.

Floyd's death on May 25, 2020, sparked protests nationwide against police brutality and racial injustice.

Bystander video showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while the 46-year-old, handcuffed and lying prone in the street, gasped for air, telling Chauvin and other officers, "I can't breathe."

The change of plea hearing is scheduled for ...

Jury awards $14 million to George Floyd protesters in Denver who alleged police department used excessive force

Jurors on Friday found police used excessive force against protesters, violating their constitutional rights, during demonstrations over the killing of George Floyd two years ago, ordering the city of Denver, Colorado, to pay a total of $14 million in damages to a group of 12 who sued.

The jury of two men and six women, largely white and drawn from around Colorado, returned its verdict after about four hours of deliberations. The verdict followed three weeks of testimony and evidence that included police and protester video of incidents.

Lawyers involved believed it was the first trial in a lawsuit challenging officer tactics during ...

Derek Chauvin was just hit with 2 lawsuits alleging racism and excessive force
The Minneapolis cop who murdered George Floyd allegedly had a history of violent and racist behavior, according to the lawsuits.

AJ DELLINGER

It’s starting to seem like this Derek Chauvin fella might be a bad guy. According to Reuters, a civil rights lawsuit filed this week against the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd alleges Chauvin exhibited racist behavior and used excessive force during two run-ins with Black residents of Minneapolis years ago.

The lawsuit is being brought by John Pope, Jr., and Zoya Code. Pope’s experience with Chauvin happened in September 2017, when the police were called to respond to a domestic disturbance situation in his home. Pope was just 14 at the time and was allegedly laying down in his bedroom and scrolling on his phone when the police arrived. According to the lawsuit, Chauvin rushed the teen, struck him multiple times in the head with a flashlight, and then pinned him to the floor by placing his knee on his back and neck.

Code’s interaction with Chauvin happened a few months earlier, in June 2017. Chauvin responded to ...

Veteran NYPD cop fired for sharing racist cartoon mocking George Floyd’s death, expletive-filled messages
John Annese and Larry McShane

A 13-year veteran NYPD cop has been fired for sending a vile 2020 group text message mocking the death of George Floyd beneath a Minneapolis police officer’s knee, the Daily News has learned.

Probationary Sgt. Yonathan Bonifacio, whose dismissal became effective this past December, forwarded an image of Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck as a white spirit was seen exiting the dead Black man’s body, NYPD disciplinary documents showed.

“Holy s---, I’m finally white,” says the Floyd character, while Chauvin is depicted as responding “You’re welcome.”

Bonifacio shared the message with nine subordinates, two of them Black officers, just three months after Floyd’s death ignited violence and mass protests across the country in the summer of 2020.

“Respondent’s dissemination of the image at this time ... was akin to ...

Derek Chauvin sentenced to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights
By Steve Karnowski

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Derek Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights, telling the former Minneapolis police officer that what he did was “simply wrong” and “offensive.”

U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson sharply criticized Chauvin for his actions on May 25, 2020, when the white officer pinned Floyd to the pavement outside a Minneapolis corner store for more than nine minutes as the Black man lay dying. Floyd’s killing sparked protests worldwide in a reckoning over police brutality and racism.

“I really don’t know why you did what you did,” Magnuson said. “To put your knee on a person’s neck until they expired is simply wrong. Your conduct is wrong and it is offensive.”

Magnuson, who earlier this year presided over the federal trial and convictions of three other officers at the scene, blamed Chauvin alone for what happened. Chauvin was by far the senior officer present as police tried to arrest Floyd while responding to a 911 call accusing him of using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes. And Chauvin rebuffed questions from one of the other officers about whether Floyd should be turned on his side.

“You absolutely destroyed the lives of three young officers by taking command of the scene,” Magnuson said.

Even so, Magnuson’s sentence was at the ...

Ex-cop Thomas Lane gets 3 years in plea deal for aiding Floyd death
Amy Forliti

A former Minneapolis police officer who pleaded guilty to a state charge of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd was sentenced Wednesday to three years.

Thomas Lane is already serving a 2 1/2-year federal sentence for violating Floyd's civil rights. When it comes to the state's case, prosecutors and Lane's attorneys had agreed to a recommended sentence of three years -- which is below the sentencing guidelines -- and prosecutors agreed to allow him to serve that penalty at the same time as ....
