Everyone calls July 4th "Independence Day", but if anything it should be "Declaration of Independence Day".

The USA didn't gain independence from Britain until it won the revolution on September 3, 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

That would coincide with Labour Day and deprive folks of a day off work.
