ALMOST HALF OF REPUBLICANS SAY MASS SHOOTINGS ARE “SOMETHING WE HAVE TO ACCEPT AS PART OF A FREE SOCIETY,” NEW POLL SAYS
The “pro-life” party, everybody!

AJ DELLINGER

ood news: most Americans are in agreement that mass shootings like the tragedies that befell Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas in recent weeks are often preventable and can largely be attributed to the accessibility of firearms. Bad news: Nearly half of all Republicans would rather continue living in a government-sanctioned death cult than accept any restrictions on their ability to own guns.

A new poll from CBS and YouGov shows that Republicans are increasingly just admitting that they are more comfortable with mass shootings than even the most reasonable forms of gun control. A whopping 44% of them said mass shootings are “something we have to accept as part of a free society.” By contrast, just 15% of Democrats and 27% of independents agree, while 72% of all those polled said the horrific events are “something we can prevent and stop if we really tried.”

Not that they have set foot in the middle ground for quite some time, but Republicans are increasingly moving away from the consensus on gun violence. The same poll found that...

REPUBLICANS HAVE PINPOINTED THE REAL VILLAIN IN THE UVALDE SHOOTING: DOORS
Rather than support any form of gun control, GOP lawmakers are now opposing school doors.

RAFI SCHWARTZ

Yesterday I recommended that murder-abetting conservative ghouls find a new soundbite to replace their tried and true and thoroughly debunked cliche of “a good guy with a gun.” Today, just 48 hours after a gunman shot and killed 19 children at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, it seems that Republican lawmakers and opinion shapers have heeded my advice by rapidly coalescing around a new trope: The Uvalde massacre could have been easily prevented, if not for the dastardly interference of doors.

Yes. Doors.

Here’s Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, ranting about the dangerous proliferation ...

Republican senator caught on his phone at opening of emotional hearing into domestic terrorism and Buffalo massacre
Cornyn is senator leading GOP negotiations on gun reform after twin tragedies in Buffalo and Uvalde

John Bowden

A Texas Republican senator was spotted using his phone while witnesses gave their opening statements at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday called in response to the massacre in Buffalo, New York.

John Cornyn was seen looking down and scrolling on his device while a former US district attorney gave his remarks to the panel.

Senators are meeting to discuss a rise in domestic terrorism including attacks by the far-right wing, including white supremacists and Islamophobic incidents. The Buffalo shooting is thought to have been committed by an 18-year-old who espoused the racist “white replacement theory”.

Mr Cornyn has come into prominence in the days since the shooting in Buffalo, as well as a horrific attack in his home state of Texas, after accepting a role as the lead GOP negotiator on the issue of reforms to gun laws as well as efforts to improve security at schools. All eyes are on the evenly-divded 50-50 Senate, where any legislation responding to America’s tragic struggle to stop school shootings and other instances of mass gun violence face a steep uphill battle to passage.

The Texas senator remains a strong opponent of most efforts to ...

Uvalde Officer Passed Up Shot at Gunman for Fear of Hitting Children
A police officer had a chance to shoot the gunman before he entered a school, according to a chief deputy sheriff. The officer declined to take the shot, fearing injuries to others.

Uvalde police never even tried to open classroom doors during school shooting: report

Kate Feldman

For 77 minutes, Uvalde police officers stood by as accused gunman Salvador Ramos rampaged through Robb Elementary School, killing 19 students and two teachers. New surveillance footage reportedly shows that those sworn to serve and protect didn’t even bother wiggling the door handle to get into the classroom.

Responding police officers appear to have assumed the doors to classrooms 111 and 112 were locked without actually checking, a source told the San Antonio News-Express Saturday. Instead, they waited around for a master key until, more than an hour later, a Border Patrol tactical team killed the suspect.

The same source told the News-Express that even without the key, officers had almost immediate access to a crowbar-like tool that should have been able to pry the door open, if it was locked at all.

While Ramos’s massacre went on in the elementary school classrooms, Uvalde school district police chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, who also served as the on-scene incident commander, kept his officers in the hallway while ...

Policing in Canada is rather weird. Where there are no provincial police forces, municipalities either have their own forces or "hire" the RCMP under contracts (Edit: for as little as possible). In simple terms: chaos.

Uvalde parents, community members call for chief's resignation at emotional school board meeting
"I pray that you make the right decision," one parent said.

Tonya Simpson, Laura Romero, and Olivia Osteen

The parents of victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting and other members of the community called for the resignation of embattled school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo at an emotional meeting of the Uvalde, Texas, school board Monday night.

The board's monthly meeting came nearly a month after the attack that took the lives of 19 students and two teachers.

"Having Pete still employed, knowing he is incapable of decision-making that saves lives is terrifying," said Brett Cross, the uncle of student Uziyah Garcia, who died in the shooting. "Innocence doesn't hide, innocence doesn't change its story, but innocence did die on May 24."

Scores of law enforcement officers responded to the shooting on May 24, with 19 of them waiting 77 minutes in the hallway outside the classroom containing the gunman, after Arredondo, the incident commander, wrongly believed that ...

Breaking News: The head of Texas' state police called the police response to the Uvalde shooting "an abject failure" that ran counter to decades of training. He said officers wasted time looking for a classroom door key that was "never needed."

Head of State Police Calls Response to Uvalde Shooting an ‘Abject Failure’
The director of the Department of Public Safety said that police officers wasted time looking for a classroom door key that was “never needed.”

Surveillance video shows a scene at Robb Elementary School outside a pair of connected classrooms where a gunman was holed up in Uvalde, Texas last month. Minutes later, officers entered the classrooms, to the left, right past the divider in the hallway. Visible are officers from the State Police, the Sheriff’s Department and the Border Patrol.

The head of the Texas State Police offered a pointed and emphatic rebuke of the police response to a shooting last month at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, calling it “an abject failure” that ran counter to decades of training.

In his comments before a special State Senate committee in Austin, Steven McCraw, the director of the Department of Public Safety, said that just minutes after a gunman began shooting children inside a pair of connected classrooms on May 24, the police at the scene had enough firepower and protective equipment to storm the classroom.

But, he said, the on-scene commander “decided to put the lives of officers ahead of the lives of children.” Mr. McCraw, speaking forcefully, said the same commander had delayed confronting the gunman because he ...

Heavily armed officers were in Robb Elementary School 9 minutes after shooter, didn’t enter classroom for 58 minutes: report

Heavily armed Uvalde, Texas, cops were inside Robb Elementary School nine minutes after a gunman began his killing spree, but waited 58 minutes to enter the classroom where the carnage took place, newly released footage reportedly shows.

Numerous officers armed with rifles and at least one ballistic shield had gathered in ...

Police officer husband of slain Uvalde teacher was detained for trying to save her
By Joseph Wilkinson

One of the two teachers killed in the Texas school shooting desperately called her husband, a police officer, for help after she was shot.

Ruben Ruiz stormed into the hallway at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde determined to save his wife, Eva Mireles. But he was stopped by other officers, detained and had his gun taken away.

Mireles, her co-teacher Irma Garcia and 19 of their fourth-grade students were killed by ...

Robb Elementary to be demolished after Uvalde school shooting
By Kate Feldman

Robb Elementary School, the Uvalde, Texas building where 19 students and two teachers were gunned down last month while police loitered in the hallway, will be torn down.

Hours after Texas law enforcement testified in the Capitol about the failed police response to the school shooting, Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told residents that it was his “understanding” that the crime scene will be demolished.

“We could never ask a child to go back, or a teacher to go back into that school ever,” McLaughlin said during a city council meeting Tuesday night.

On May 24, 18-year-old suspect Salvador Ramos walked into the elementary school uninterrupted and ...

Doctors Respond To NRA Telling Them To "Stay In Their Lane" Over Gun Control

STEPHEN LUNTZ

he American College of Physicians (ACP), whose members are tired of picking the bullets out of victims of gun violence has published a set of recommendations on how to tackle the problem. Predictably, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and conservative commentators were outraged, telling them to “stay in their lane.” Obvious to everyone except their critics, doctors have responded by explaining why their expertise on the topic matters – and their message is devastating.

In October the Health and Public Policy Committee of the ACP published a paper in the Annals of Internal Medicine on what can be done to reduce deaths and injuries from guns. As the paper notes, the ACP has advocated similar policies for 20 years, but ...
