The staggering scope of U.S. gun deaths goes far beyond mass shootings
By Mark Berman, Lenny Bernstein, Dan Keating, Andrew Ba Tran and Artur Galocha

The spate of shooting attacks in communities such as Highland Park, Ill.; Uvalde, Tex.; and Buffalo has riveted attention on America’s staggering number of public mass killings. But the rising number of gun deaths in the United States extends beyond such high-profile episodes, emerging nearly every day inside homes, outside bars and on the streets of many cities, according to federal data.

The surge in gun violence comes as firearm purchases rose to record levels in 2020 and 2021, with more than 43 million guns estimated to have been purchased during that period, according to a Washington Post analysis of federal data on gun background checks. At the same time, the rate of gun deaths in those years hit the highest level since 1995, with more than 45,000 fatalities each year.

Guns are used in most suicides and are almost entirely responsible for an overall rise in homicides across the country from 2018 to 2021, according to ...

52 school buses travel to Ted Cruz’s home carrying school shooting victims’ items
Sarah Do Couto

The 52 yellow school buses included in 'The NRA Children's Museum.' The mile-long procession visited Republican Senator Ted Cruz on July 15. 2022

A mile-long fleet of 52 yellow school buses travelled to Ted Cruz‘s Texas home on Thursday morning in the hopes of delivering the Republican senator a strong message about gun violence in the U.S.

The school buses contained 4,368 empty seats, the same number of children killed in firearm-related incidents since 2020, according to an examination of available Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mortality data.

Onboard the school buses were also several personal items belonging to school shooting victims.

BuzzFeed News reported that among the items were beat-up checkered Vans (worn by Gracie Muehlberger, 15, killed at her Santa Clarita, Calif., high school in 2019), a smiling stuffed animal (belonging to Chase Kowalski, 7, killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012) and a ...

Did the July 4th Shooting at Highland Park Really Take Place?
Mike Weisser

Image

Ready? Here comes the single craziest statement that anyone has ever made about gun violence in the United States.

And who made it? None other than Marjorie Taylor Greene who said in a podcast that the recent mass shootings in Highland Park on July 4th were ‘staged.’

Why was the shooting which killed seven people and injured dozens more nothing other than a phony event? Because it would galvanize public opinion and push Republicans to support gun control.

That’s what she said. She really did. Which is why we have the 1st Amendment in this country so that people like MJT can get away with saying such loony, hurtful things.

Except maybe they can’t, if it turns out that what they said really did result in someone else getting hurt. After all, the Constitution doesn’t protect someone who stands up and yells ‘fire!’ in a crowded theater, right?

It just so happens that one of ...

To ensure the shooter has a backup weapon (or what could possibly go wrong)

North Carolina county to keep AR-15s in school safes in case of shooting

By Kate Feldman

A North Carolina sheriff is stocking district schools with AR-15s in response to the May school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

The six schools in Madison County will keep the semiautomatic weapons in a safe on campus for use by the school resource officer in an emergency, Sheriff Buddy Harwood told the Asheville Citizen-Times.

“We’ve also got breaching tools to go into those safes,” he told the newspaper. “We’ve got extra magazines with ammo in those safes.”

The Madison County SROs have been undergoing training over summer vacation and have a scheduled scenario meant to “replicate a high-impact incident requiring emergency response” next week.

Schools will also be outfitted with a ...

"in a safe on campus for use by the school resource officer in an emergency"

Okay, but how many bullets can be pumped into kids by the time the officer *gets* the big guns?

And why are we OK with making schools war zones?

And why does the officer need this much firepower? He only has one target. He doesn't need to squeeze off 100 rounds in 40 seconds. What could go wrong here?

3 Dead in Shooting at Florida Narcotics Anonymous Meeting
Officers responded to a report that a man was shot and a woman was being held hostage Monday night in Edgewater, which is near Daytona Beach

By The Associated Press

A man went into a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Florida and fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and her friend before turning the gun on himself, police said Tuesday.

Quinton Hunter brandished the gun shortly after entering the Monday night meeting, Edgewater police Chief Joseph Mahoney said during a news conference Tuesday. About 20 other participants safely fled and called police, he said.

Erica Hoffman and Ian Greenfield were already dead when officers arrived, the chief said. At some point after the shooting, Hunter began recording ...

That has to be the most chilling condemnation of the American public I've seen. Next think ya know, someone will be posing or filming something like this and catch a murder in real time. Maybe their own.

Washington state school shooter sentenced to 40 years in prison
Jessica Schladebeck

A student who opened fire inside his Washington state high school, fatally striking one classmate and wounding three others, was ordered to spend 40 years behind bars.

Caleb Sharpe, who was 15 during 2017 shooting at Freeman High School, offered an apology to his victims prior to his sentencing on Friday. It marked his first public comments since his arrest five years ago.

“I’m sorry to this entire community,” Sharpe said before the courtroom “I’m sorry to ...

Those connected to Freeman school shooter paint conflicting picture of his family life
Emma Epperly

Laura Franz is in the middle of a “Grand Canyon-size” divide between her Freeman community friends and her children’s half-brother, Caleb Sharpe.

“All I can offer you is my, ‘I’m sorry,’ ” Franz wrote in an impact statement read during Sharpe’s sentencing hearing Tuesday.

Franz was once married to Ben Sharpe, Caleb’s father. The two share older children.

In her statement, read by public defender Michelle Hess, Franz said she knew from her children the environment in the Sharpe home was “toxic.” Once they moved out, Caleb Sharpe was “really very alone,” she wrote.

Sharpe shot and killed Sam Strahan, injured three girls and terrorized dozens of his classmates when he opened fire in a hallway at Freeman High School on Sept. 13, 2017. He pleaded guilty earlier this year. Sentencing hearings began Monday, with Spokane County Superior Court Judge Michael Price expected to hand down his ruling Friday.

The shooting was a product of numerous factors, Franz wrote, including Sharpe’s home environment.

“I am here in no way trying to defend his actions,” Franz wrote. “There is no defense.”

She went on to apologize at length to ...

AP-NORC Poll: Most in U.S. want stricter gun laws
The Associated Press

Most U.S. adults think gun violence is increasing nationwide and want to see gun laws made stricter, according to a new poll that finds broad public support for a variety of gun restrictions, including many that are supported by majorities of Republicans and gun owners.

The poll by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also shows majorities of U.S. adults view both reducing gun violence and protecting gun ownership as important issues.

The poll was conducted between July 28 and Aug. 1, after a string of deadly mass shootings — from a New York grocery store to a school in Texas and a July 4 parade in Illinois — and a 2020 spike in gun killings that have increased attention on the issue of gun violence. Overall, 8 in 10 Americans perceive that gun violence is increasing around the country, and about two-thirds say it's increasing in their state, though less than half believe it's increasing in their community, the poll shows.

The question of how to prevent such violence has long divided politicians and many voters, making it difficult to change gun laws. In June, a conservative majority on the Supreme Court expanded gun rights, finding a constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defense.

Later that same month, President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan gun safety bill. The package, approved in the wake of shootings like the one that killed 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, was both a measured compromise and the most significant bill addressing gun violence to be approved in Congress in decades — an indication of how intractable the issue has become.

The poll found 71% of Americans say gun laws should be stricter, including about half of Republicans, the vast majority of Democrats, and a majority of ...

Heckler Applauded After Bluntly Shutting Ted Cruz Down Over His School Shooting Solution

Republican Senator Ted Cruz is one of the most pro-gun members of Congress, and the aftermath of the horrific Uvalde school shooting in his state back in May seems to have only deepened his dedication to the gun lobby.

And if the crowd at a recent panel discussion he joined is any indication, people in his state have had it with him.

During a recent talk at The Texas Tribune Festival, Cruz as always touted the usual Republican boilerplate about solving school shootings by ...

To put it in perspective .....

Gun Violence Costs the U.S. $557 Billion a Year

MADISON MULLER

Gun violence that causes tens of thousands of U.S. deaths each year—far more than any other developed nation—is having a significant, negative impact on the country’s economy, Harvard Medical School researchers said.

Harvard Medical School researchers found that gun violence costs the U.S. some $557 billion annually, or 2.6% of gross domestic product, according to the peer-reviewed study published in the journal JAMA. The majority of that cost is attributed to ...
