For whatever reason this makes me think of a friend of mine. Someone from my judo club when I was a teen (he'd have been in his late 20's at the time). In any case, his daughter decided she wanted a pen pal and, since dad did judo, thought someone from Japan would be ideal. So she found an outfit that specialized in connecting people and sent in her name and contact information. So far so good. But the company messed up and instead of sending her one letter from a possible pen pal they sent her hundreds. So she reached into the pile, picked one at random (without even reading it) and then bundled the rest up and shipped them back.

Turns out the letter she had kept was from a young boy about her age and they corresponded all thru the remainder of grade school and high school. Fast forward till they were in their early 20's and he came to visit. First time they'd ever met face to face. Think you can see where this is going - he proposed but she said no. He came back for a couple of years later and this time she said yes. End result was the married and settled in Japan.
