I can't tell if it's a scam or not, hubby will be checking later ( I hope)

*EVERY MONTH* I get an e-mail "from MSN" that says our credit card info needs to be updated. Hubby is 100% sure it's already up to date. We never click directly from the e-mail, of course.

Today, I get "We're sending you this message to confirm that your MSN Narrowband Unlimited Access subscription was canceled on Wednesday, August 06, 2014."

I have no idea what it means, I'm still able to get on the internet-at least for now. Of course, getting any actual help from MSN is impossible. My mom got suckered into some very expensive "help" when she tried to contact MSN last year. There are so many scam outfits that claim to BE MSN that aren't.

<sigh>

Chaos, I've never heard of "MSN Narrowband Unlimited Access subscription" ~ is that something you signed up for? ~ if your answer is "yes", then I have to ask "why???" ~ I have unlimited access to all things MSN for free ~

I did a quick generic Google search ~ take a look at https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=MSN+Narrowband+Unlimited+Access+subscription and see if anything there helps ~

It's all Greek to me, sooz. lol But I'll show hubby later, thanks!

So far, everything works. We pay Comcast for cable/internet/phone bundle now, maybe it's something we didn't need anyway?

Sounds like a phishing scam to me. The recent news about 1.2 million passwords being hacked from (I forget how many) sites by Russian hackers was found to be used for phishing purposes. Beware!

MSN Narrowband Unlimited Access subscription

That's dial-up. Why would anyone still use MSN? Chaos, You don't need that stuff. If you are usingt a MSN email address you still could use it if you log on at hotmail with that email and password. But you definitely don't need to update your credit card info with MSN. Were they charging you for years?

Thanks, Oskar! Seems we aren't the only ones....

Jab- hubby asks if you know exactly what-if anything-we would lose if we cancelled the MSN subscription?

We'd still be able to access MSN email using our current addys?

From MSN:
If you wish to cancel this subscription, your email address will remain as is and will continue to be accessible via hotmail.com using any browser

Would seem as if you have been paying for absolutely nothing since you stopped using dial-up.
How can this be legal?

It's called "negative option billing". The cable companies did this in Canada until the regulatory agency kicked them in the butt and ordered a few million in rebates. Basically, they'll bill you until you tell them to stop. It's legalized theft.

I think that has now become an illegal practice under consumer protection, Sid.

Yep: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_option_billing

I know it's illegal in CONada but I don't know about the US. "Anything goes" seems to be the order of the day in the capitalist capitol of the world.

I think our CONada is nearing its end and will soon return to its CANada status, Sid.
