It was fine all day...turned it off to go to Back To School night. Came home, turned it on...nothing but a black screen.

Hubby figured out that the CPU had died, and crunched the numbers. Found a discounted laptop at Staples that was a better deal in the long run. So I'm back in action.

We may be able to combine parts from some old laptops we now have to create one that works. Some rainy day...

It's amazing, and somewhat unsettling, how dependent we've all become on "being connected" ~ glad you found a do-able replacement, Chaos ~

Kiddo has an OLD Gateway laptop that will limp around the internet....verrrry slowly. She let me borrow it to hold me over.

Hubby hasn't moved any of my "stuff" that we have on backup yet. (Finding my way round without all my bookmarks has been a challenge!) And there may be a few things that are lost, but we won't know until we try.

But sometimes, it's the little things that get to you the most. I had the current temperature displayed by my calendar/clock on the old one and we *cannot* figure out how do that on this one yet. It's making me craaaazy. lol

Rip the harddrive out of your "dead" laptop and connect it with such an adapter to a working laptop.

Access to anything on the old drive.

That's the plan, as far as I know. Hubby has one of those gizmos and he knows how to rip out a hard drive, though I can't say for sure if it's the one in your link, jab. I'll show him that one. And yes, he put Advanced System care on right away-we LOVE that thing. :)

What brand/model is the dead laptop?
Is the fan running, drive clicking?
Checked with an external monitor if maybe just the screen is dead?
So many possibilities, so little "CPU just died". ;)

This is really not my area jab....lol...but I'll try.

Recently Dead: HP Pavilion G Series

The caps lock button was flashing, which supposedly indicated dead CPU according to the snooping around hubby did online.

Not sure about the fan, but he did say he "couldn't hear the hard drive". I can tell you that every HP we've had ran very, very hot all the time. Always had to use one of those cooling pads/fans under it.

Prior dead: HP G-50-109NR Notebook PC

The hard drive on *that* one had been moaning/groaning/squeaking for quite a while. If memory serves, it had died and been resurrected a few times before it finally quit.

Caps lock flashing can mean a lot of different faults.

Caps Lock/Num Lock LED

  • LEDs blink 1 time
    CPU not functional
  • LEDs blink 2 times
    BIOS corruption failure
  • LEDs blink 3 times
    Memory Module error not functional
  • LEDs blink 4 times
    Graphics controller not functional
  • LEDs blink 5 times
    General system board failure
  • LEDs blink 6 times
    BIOS authentication failure

If you have a CPU failure I'd go to town with a can of air and get the dog and cat hair out of the fan.
You get the CPU failure when the fan can't start up during boot due to blockage by dust bunnies. Sometimes you have to take the laptop apart to get to the fan. You'd be surprised what collects near the fan.

Sorry jab....hubby had a busy evening last night.

Fan does work.
It was the one blink for CPU dead.
