On my Win7 Pro version, I just have to left click on the icon. It brings up the volume control which has an up or down bar for sound. As well, you can left click on the volume icon on the open display to mute/unmute the speakers. A red X usually means it's muted. For future reference.

Thanks, roseanne ~ yes, I'm still on Win7 ~ and I tried all that before posting ~ then I started poking around and finally restarted my computer ~ VOILA! ~ the red "x" was gone and I had sound again ~ weird, I know ~ or, as jab says, "it's magic" ~ :b
