Sid's now a big shot with his windows 7 and his new video card.
Laffin, we're out of his league now with our crappy cards. Done. History.

You're right. See, he already ignores our posts in this thread. We are outcasts now. Small people. He probably put us on his ignore list.

Damn, Sid. You and your video card.
You made me research current video cards and their prices again. It is the most frustrating experience one can have on the internet.
I know since at least a year that I have to replace at least one of my two XFX 8600GT cards with something better. Both had already blown capacitors and I could solder replacement caps in but that's just a band aid.
Of course I want to get something better than 2005 technology but don't want to pay more than 200 bucks and that's already on the high side.

I think I'll just get me another peach ice cream and download some porn.

Thanks Sid.  Because of you and your NEW computer and my OLD, looks-like-it's-fixin'-to-die computer, I spent a good part of the day researching cheap systems, just in case.

I decided to go loaded for bear and my friend offered to build this one, allowing me to pay over time like I did last winter for my other Win 7 machine. I did this because my XP box is getting a little "long in the tooth" and I really had to avoid running into the very situation you're in. A word of advice... if you buy a new manufactured computer like Dell or IBM, you're getting Win 7 whether you have hardware that works with it or not. I would be looking at moving your files from your XP box and then formatting and reinstalling XP so you can continue to use your peripherals if they're not supported in Win 7. That's what I've had to do and so far so good.

Jab... a word about this video card... I'm using the HDMI out for my monitor and I find it to be far superior to the DVI out. It's a lot less harsh, handles gradients a lot better and the contrast is spot on. This video card wasn't all that expensive - @ $150 Canadian and so far it's showing itself to be a lot more stable than the 9500GT in the other Win 7 box.

Well, you screwed up my financial planning as of late. I had put video cards completely.out of my mind until your OP. That's when I remembered, yes, I really should check if graphic card prices went down a bit. Now I'm again checking hard ware forums, comparisons, Newegg, Tiger etc, and today even Amazon. Found, what I believe would be a dream card, an Asus GTX460 1GB Overclocking Edition. Dream card meaning just a tad more than my upper price limit and that card has to be a huge step up from my 8600GT.

Product Description

ASUS proudly introduces the ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/1GD5 over-clocked with 800 MHz engine clock for reaching 115% performance. DirectCU thermal solution comes with three 8 mm flattened copper heat-pipes to contact GPU directly for up to 20% COOLER than generic GeForce GTX460 TOP. ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/1GD5 embeds not only GDDR5 memory, but supports Microsoft DirectX 11. With the exclusive Voltage Tweak functionality via the Smart Doctor application, ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/1GD5 covers every possible overclocking and overvolting scenario. Beginners to veterans, gamers can make the most of the new GPU using detailed tweaking options that can easily boost speed by up to 50%. With added cooling solutions, even more radical speeds and improvements can be attained.

Right now at Amazon for 209.99 with free shipping. Will be shipped in 2 to 4 weeks.
That card should get me by for the next 5 years and I think the price is a steal, even Newegg has it for 20 bucks more.
Either I get this card or I keep limping with a 5 year old card ready to croak.
I need someone to tell me if I should pull the trigger before midnight.

"Thank you, your order has been placed.
An e-mail confirmation has been sent to you."

Oh my god, I really did it. Thank god for my Amazon CC. Obama should be proud of me.
Life is good. Got today a S/S bottom freezer fridge out of a foreclosed house, almost new Maytag, in exchange for a dishwasher install. Basically we robbed the bank. Image
The house in foreclosure has all the appliances, just a little, or to be exact, a lot older. I'm glad that my 20 year old fridge found a new home.

I hope so, too. If we can't get along well, or if I get buyer's remorse, I'll send it back to Amazon. Image
But then, I had my current card for almost 5 years now and when I get the new card, the old one will replace a crappy card in my XP work horse.

I guess I did, but then, I have an older MB, older CPU, Vista on that machine, and I still have to wait 2 to 4 weeks before they even ship it.
I really do hope that the card delivers what I expect. You don't know how many nights I spent comparing ATI and Nvidia, 45xx, 46xx, 47xx, 56xx, 57xx, all the 200 series, and always got the sticker shock of 400 bucks plus for what I thought I should get to last me the next 5 years. If it works right out of the box, I'll have to replay Bioshock and maybe get me another game to see the newfangled hitech at work.
Now I better suppress that I just spent 200 plus on yet another gadget.

A friend of mine was telling me about solid state hard drives. He's got one - 120 gigabyte for $450. I told him I'll wait until they're 1 Tb and $50 a pop before I buy one.

No, Sid. No matter how many more gadgets you're going to throw in, the video card is it. I will not, I repeat, I will not look up current prices for SSD.

Well, me too Jab.  They're way to pricey for my blood.  Like I said, I'll wait until they're big and cheap.  But... I will be getting an external TV tuner/capture box for this Win 7 machine soon.

Well, I peeked at Newegg. 32 GB SSD for less than a hundred, that's not too bad for putting just the operating system on it and that would be the main reason to get such a drive.
Nope, not buying. I'm fine with the drives I have. Almost 2 TB on my vista machine (the one with the internal Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Image) and 1.5TB on the good ole XP machine.
Plenty of space and speed for all the porn one can download. Image

I really really really wanted one of those Hauppauge boxes but I found a cheaper work around. I have an ADS DVDXpressDX2 external capture box and because Adobe Premiere 9 works fine in an MPEG environment - problem solved.

Still at least seven more days before she starts her trip to my home via UPS.
I have already hives.

Reading your posts on this thread, is like trying to read a foreign language.  I have no idea what you are talking about but whatever it is, it surely must be good.  Congratulations on your new computer.  All I know about a computer is how to turn it on, type on it  ( I do type very fast though.... 86 wpm last test given to me) and print out whatever I need.  Image

Also thanks to Jabra's help, I can follow instructions on how to fix problems.
