Desert Island Discs is one of Radio 4's most popular and enduring programmes. Created by Roy Plomley in 1942, the format is simple: each week a guest is invited to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island.

The discussion of their choice is a device for them to review their life. They also choose a favourite book (excluding the Bible or other religious work and the complete works of Shakespeare - these already await the "castaway") and a luxury which must be inanimate and have no practical use.

Desert Island Discs is a national institution in the UK, offering a unique insight into the minds of public figures. As well as choosing the eight records, a luxury item and a book, people also describe why they have made these choices: maybe they evoke a period of their life, or have changed their thinking in some way. I thought that it might be interesting to do the same in this forum.

Excellent, thought-provoking question, AQ ~ each of the target items presents great challenges ~ given my natural tendency to laziness lately, I'm hoping you'll agree to split this question into its 3 parts [records, book, and luxury item so that we get 3 days of questions ~ Image] ~ assuming you DO agree, let's start with the 8 records today ~ and now I have to compile my own list ~

LOL Sooz - of course I agree. It is really tough to condense the soundtrack of your life down to 8 tracks. Here's my effort:

1. Dust in the Wind (Kansas)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qxSwJC3Ly0

This song reminds me of how small and insignificant I am (a reminder I often need). At the same time, I find it life-enhancing, as it stresses the need not to waste a moment of your life and not to over-value money and possessions. In summary, it keeps my feet on the ground and lifts me above my own petty concerns when I am feeling down.

I close my eyes
Only for a moment and the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity

Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground
Though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Ohh...

Now don't hang on
Nothin' lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind (All we are is dust in the wind)
Dust in the wind (Everything is dust in the wind)
Everything is dust in the wind

2. From a Distance (Julie Gold)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtAqz8Zjomg

This song is very special to me. I think the lyrics say it better than I ever could.

From a distance
The world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance
The ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance
There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It's the voice of hope
It's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man

From a distance
We all have enough
And no one is in need
And there are no guns,
No bombs and no disease,
No hungry mouths to feed

From a distance
We are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope
Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man
God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance

From a distance
You look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance
I just cannot comprehend
What all this fighting's for

From a distance
There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
And it's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance...

3. Imagine (John Lennon)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okd3hLlvvLw

It's easy to write this song off as the utopian dream of an idealist. But I am proud to be an idealist - why should we settle for less, when we can aspire to so much more? I think we have to believe we can change things if anything is to change for the better.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

4. Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRMz8fKkG2g

So beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. This is a very special version from September 2001.

5. Father and Son (Cat Stevens)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jek6iP6AuAQ

I find this song very moving. It speaks to me very powerfully of the impossibility of passing on one's experience to a younger person in an effort to save them pain. I also remember very well disregarding so much good advice when I myself was young, believing that people who cared about me were just fuddy duddies who wanted to tie me down ...

Father: It's not time to make a change, just relax, take it easy,
You're still young that's your fault, there's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
I was once like you were now, and I know that it's not easy
To be calm when you've found something going on,
But take your time, think a lot, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Son: How can I try to explain, 'cause when I do he turns away again.
It's always the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen,
Now there's a way and I know I have to go.
Away, I know, I have to go.

Father: It's not time to make a change, just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault, there's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

Son: All the times that I've cried, keeping all the things I knew inside.
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them they know, not me.
Now there's a way, and I know that I have to go away,
I know I have to go.

6. Maybe I'm Amazed (Paul McCartney)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm2YyVZBL8U

This song reminds me so strongly of what it's like to be in love - the wonder of it, and also the fear.

Baby I'm amazed at the way you love me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I love you
Baby I'm amazed at the the way you pulled me out of time
Hung me on a line
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you

Baby I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he dosen't really understand
Babe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me to understand

Baby I'm a man and maybe I'm a lonely man
Who's in the middle of something
That he doesn't really understand
Babe I'm a man and maybe you're the only woman
Who could ever help me
Baby won't you help me understand

Baby I'm amazed at the way you're with me all the time
Maybe I'm afraid of the way I leave you
Baby I'm amazed at the way you help me sing my song
You right me when I'm wrong
Maybe I'm amazed at the way I really need you

7. Cleanin' Out My Closet (Eminem) WARNING: EXPLICIT LYRICS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwDj6inuMHA

To me, Eminem is the poet of his generation, a poet whose immense talent will be recognised by many generations to come. The juxtaposition of his anger with his mother and his very real concern and care for her provokes powerful emotions, as does his imagery.

Have you ever been hated, or discriminated against?
I have, I've been protested and demonstrated against
Picket signs for my wicked rhymes, look at the times
Sick as the mind, of the mother fuckin' kid that's behind
All this commotion, emotions run deep as oceans explodin'
Tempers flarin' from parents just blow 'em off and keep goin'
Not takin' nothin' from no one, give em hell long as I'm breathin'
Keep kickin' ass in the mornin', and takin' names in the evenin'
Leave them with a taste sour as vinegar in they mouth
See they can trigga me, but they'll never figure me out
Look at me now, I betcha prolly sick of me now
Ain't you mama, I'ma make you look so ridiculous now

I'm sorry mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant make you cry
But tonight, I'm cleanin' out my closet
One More Time
I said,
I'm sorry mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant make you cry
But tonight, I'm cleanin' out my closet
Ha!

I got some skeletons in my closet
And I don't know if no one knows it
So before they throw me inside my coffin and close it
I'ma expose it, I'll take you back to '73
Before I ever had a multi-platinum sellin' CD
I was a baby maybe I was just a coupla months
My faggot father must've had his panties up in a bunch
'Cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye
No I don't, on second thought I just fuckin' wished he would die
I look at Hailie, and I couldn't picture leavin' her side
Even if I hated Kim, I grit my teeth and I try to make it work
With her at least for Hailie's sake I maybe made some mistakes
But I'm only human but I'm man enough to face 'em today
What I did was stupid, no doubt it was dumb
But the smartest shit I did was take the bullets outta that gun
Cause I'd of killed 'em, shit I woulda shot Kim and them both
It's my life, I'd like to welcome ya'll to the Eminem show

I'm sorry mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant make you cry
But tonight, I'm cleanin' out my closet
One More Time
I said,
I'm sorry mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant make you cry
But tonight, I'm cleanin' out my closet
Ha!

Now I would never diss my own mama just to get recognition
Take a second to listen for who you think this record is dissin'
But put yourself in my position, just try to envision
Witnessin' your mama poppin' prescription pills in the kitchen
Bitchin' that someone's always goin' through her purse and shit's missin'
Goin' through public housin' systems, victim of Munchhausen Syndrome
My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn't
'Til I grew up, now I blew up it makes you sick to your stomach, doesn't it?
Wasn't it the reason you made that CD for me, MA?
So you could try to justify the way you treated me, MA?
But guess what, you're gettin' older now and it's cold when you're lonely
And Nathan's growin' up so quick he's gonna know that you're phony
And Hailie's gettin' so big now, you should see her, she's beautiful
But you'll never see her, she won't even be at your funeral *hahaha*
See what hurts me the most, is you won't admit you was wrong
Bitch, do your song, keep tellin' yourself that you was a mom
But how dare you try to take what you didn't help me to get
You selfish bitch, I hope you fuckin' burn in hell for this shit!
Remember when Ronnie died and you said you wished it was me?
Well guess what, I am dead, dead to you as can be!!

I'm sorry mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant make you cry
But tonight, I'm cleanin' out my closet
One More Time
I said,
I'm sorry mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant make you cry
But tonight, I'm cleanin' out my closet
Ha!

8. Jupiter from The Planets Suite (Gustav Holst)

This lifts my soul! Very appropriate: it's subtitled 'The Bringer of Jollity'. Awesome.

8 songs, or 8 albums? Coming up with a list of 8 is going to take me a while, though. Can't I just be stranded with an iPod? Afterall, if my desert island has power for a record player, surely I can charge up an iPod.
