I first noticed it during Wheel of Fortune, and thought it was some new sound they added to the wheel. Now I occasionally hear it on other broadcasts too and one I notice it I can't NOT notice it. It's extremely annoying, and so far there is no real explanation.

The annoyance comes in the repetition—a tone of half a dozen little bleeps and bloops would play over and over, every 10 seconds or so, sometimes barely noticeable and occasionally quite loud. What it really sounds like more than anything is an old, 1990s or early 2000s cell phone with an “electronic” ringer.

Same here. Women are more sensitive to high pitched sounds. Makes us quicker to respond to crying babies.

Proabaly an audio cue to begin an operation. Example, on our public radio station it cues a recording to play the station ID. So no human is needed to speak it, or push a button to play it. Another labor-saving device.

That makes sense, but I think they do it to drive people like Chaos and I crazy.
