'Only in Canada': Smart car transformed into snow-car

This is a hack guaranteed to melt the hearts of Canadians whose faces have frozen riding a snowmobile.

Call it the Smart-mobile: a Mercedes Smart car mounted on winter ATV tracks in the rear and snowmobile-style skis in the front.

The bizarre-looking vehicle is the creation of Ottawa mechanic Tod Anderson who modified a 2006 Smart diesel and designed the skis himself.

“It’s just a thought that came to me and it seemed like the right thing to do. It’s a rear-drive, rear-engine car so it’s ideal for this sort of thing. The whole point of this exercise was to see if it could be done.”

He said the machine turns and handles surprisingly well, and can reach speeds of 70 km/h.

Anderson figures the snow-car cost him about $7,000 and took about a month-and–a-half of tinkering. He says it only takes an hour to put the wheels back on.

The invention had been a local secret until someone snapped a picture of the vehicle and posted it on Reddit under the caption, “Only in Canada.”

That post has since gone viral. Many commenters say they would like to tackle winter roads in the jacked-up Smart car but, unfortunately, it’s not street legal

10 years from now there won't be much snow, if any, except for a few weeks in the Arctic.

That's a fallacy. Global warming means there will be more snow rather than less because the warmer temperatures mean the atmosphere can hold more moisture than when it's colder. It will still be cold enough to snow though and the dumps will be bigger - remember "Snowmegaddon". We'll also get more rain for the same reason and longer but wetter spring and falls.

The upside is that when we do get the white stuff we'll get to play with gadgets like the ones Roseanne and Sid posted.

Please, please don't call it a sled. That is a motorized snow vehicle known as a Ski-doo or Snowmobile. The bane of mountain regions in W. Canada. They are loud, the drivers are speed demons and have no regard for the environment. They have chased the local wildlife off and destroy the flora. They trigger avalanches and pollute the air.

Sorry, but after being in this region, I've learned to despise them and have noticed the riders call them sleds. Perhaps to soften the perception of the above description. I only posted the pic due to the innovation.

This is one version of a sled. Powered by humans (or sometimes pulled by dogs), guided by inertia and are virtually silent....except for the excited squeals of the riders, lol.

I haven't seen a sled like that in decades. Do they still make those?

BTW Roseanne: I agree with you on the snowmobile thing. I hate them with a passion not necessarily because of the technology but because of the users. The machine I posted is actually a Go Fund Me project and is supposed to be electric powered.

1911 romance with propeller right behind your sweetheart, frolicking through a magical winterscape! It is unknown how the f*%k this vehicle made it more than 200 feet.

I loved that police snow mobile. It's actually the Swiss water police 1963 on the frozen lake Zürich. It's just so typical German, too. Only the older, more mature cop is allowed to steer that high-tech racer. I wonder if they went after speeding ice skaters or just got a call that someone didn't pick up his wiener dog's poo on the ice?
