Funny, but I've bought so many sweaters that say "Hand wash. Lay flat to dry" I give the tag a one-finger salute and machine wash and dry on regular settings. Nothing catastrophic has happened. No "laundry police" have darkened my door and the sweaters are fine.

I wonder how much benefit using cold water is. By the time the dryer has warmed the clothes enough to start drying them any power savings from using hot water has been lost.
