CALGARY -- Is is too early to hope for a chinook?

After suffering through a wet and cool summer, Calgarians now face a dismal fall with the snow a distinct possibility on Thursday.

"It's early in the year to be hoping for a chinook, I hope we don't have to get to that stage but looking at the models there's nothing to indicate over the next seven to 10 days of a big change in weather," said Environment Canada meteorologist Bill McMurtry. "We're looking at a continuation of below normal temperatures."

Typically, in early to mid-September, the city would be seeing temperatures in the high teens -- but not this year.

"We'd even settle for near normal temperatures, but we don't seem to be close to that," said McMurtry. "Usually, you'd see some light at the end of the tunnel, but we just don't see that right now.

"Last year, September saved us from an absolutely lousy summer because temperatures were very similar last summer as to what they were this summer, however, we had that spectacular September. We had more 30-degree temperatures in September last year than we did in the entire summer. This year September doesn't look to be so good, so far."
