While I've never spent time contemplating this, I'm virtually sure I've never seen a cat swim before ~ it's not common ... is it?

No, sooz, cats don't generally like to go into the water.  However, they do get curious and they do like to be with the people they like, so they will.  Some of the big cats like to swim, like the tigers.

We had a home where it flooded a lot.  We had a cheap plastic canoe and would go shopping for people.  We were going one time and looked back and our cat was swimming to the canoe.  She went every time after that.

That's a cool story, jeanne.   I suggested that Jeff take one of our cats down to the lake and see if he likes swimming.

If I post it on youtube; it worked

Well, if you can't post the cat swimming you can always post the first aid techniques used on Jeff after he tried to get the cat to swim.

kathy. the cat might need motivation.  If someone it loves is in the water it might swim to them.

When Billy was a kitten...

I was taking a bath and he just wanted so much to be with me he ran all the way from the bathroom door and jumped right in! What was so funny was how the look on his face changed in mid air - from complete joy to "HOLY CRAP!". What wasn't so funny was all his claws on my soft, wet skin as he panicked to get out! Thankfully he was just a little guy at the time. I'd hate to go through that with him being the size he is now.
