Did you check out the lost prophet song "roof tops"? At around the 2:55 point my favorite part of that song starts.
I'll repost the link to it here in case the other posts goes away.

Stay with me here......You know how "Oceans Eleven" and it's sequals have the quirky, upbeat music when they are planning or performing a heist? Well, Tokyo Jihen - Osca, without the vocals, would be a perfect fit if they ever did an "Oceans Fourteen"!!

Now for something beautiful from the old days. Sandy Denny. She was erotic, chilling, melodic, more things than I wish to say about a woman. These live cuts have some glitches and a bit of Sandy off-key at a point or two. But it gives you an idea about what Sandy was about. Look under her name or Fairport Convention for her produced products.

The best voice since Nina Simone in her time. She is gone now.

Find "John The Gun" for her best anthem.

Sax??? Ever hear R&B great Maciel Parker? He was James Brown's best sax man. They later had a quarrel and broke up. Maciel was the guy on "Mother Popcorn", and I'm pretty sure he goes back as far as "Night Train." He did his own album afterward, of which I still have the vinyl.

Thack- Abe is definitely building on the charred remains of the flaming wreck of Jaco Pastorius. more funky. less jazzy. but very very good.

that second one adds some new things, like the flamenco style playing. that is different. two thumbs up!

I looked for it on the tube but didn't find it. If you have access to the "Pump Up The Volume" soundtrack, it's on there. I'm looking at it right here on my desk. It's a very "upbeat" version of the original.....the guitar at the beginning will blow your socks off. Make sure and turn up to stereo! You may be able to find it on a peer to peer music site. I've not looked for it anywhere other than youtube because I have it on CD.

I met Zappa at a concert in Annapolis, Maryland back in the 70's. He had John Luc Ponty on violin that day.
Here's a song I'd like to dedicate to some of my friends in Alert.

i think Absolutely Free and Freak Out are possibly the most revolutionary rock albums ever. it is so beyond most of what was going on at the time that it can scarcely be compared.
I was tripping and woke my dad up and played Call Any Vegetable for him and said, "Dad, this will explain this generational gap to you" and he just stared at me.
Zappa was a great innovator. A smart guy and could have made a mint if he had decided to go mainstream. I always admired him for doing what the thought was right instead of what made him the most money.

Tonight was the American Idol Tour at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Filled to capacity and too warm, but fabulous!!!!
My 12 year old niece wore her David Archuleta to shirt (like most 9-13 year old girls). Each of the ten finalists sang 3 songs. David Archuleta and David Cook each sang four. The encore was Cook's Billie Jean, followed by a group sing. Surprisingly, Jason Castro did not sing Hallelujah and Archuleta did not sing Imagine.
Kristy Lee Cook is stunning, but not crowd pleasing. Syesha is both. She bored me with Umbrella, but was wonderful on Beyonce's Listen. I have never been a Brooke White fan and she was my least favorite tonight. She sang Let It Be. some snap song, and something called Yellow. Michael Johns and Carly Smithson were excellent. Carly's lost weight.
Great show!!!! Catch it if you can.

no, it is worse than that. it is (4) measures of 6/8 followed by (4) measures of 2/8, for a total of 32 beats in triplet form. it is totally weird. amazing. and, for me at least, almost impossible to count.

Slip of the Lip reminded me of "Ratt" but since I really only like "round and round" by ratt and it was so overplayed, I'm going to post another hair band song.
By a group named "Cinderella, this song crosses into the "anthem" arena which very few hairbands could pull off but tried constantly. Cinderella does a nice job with this song and it remains one of my favorites for the period.

I like a deep sound, macro. I'm not much for the "sit around the campfire and strum on the guitar" type simplicity. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that kind of simplicity and realize it's not as 'simple' as the artists make it appear, but I'd rather have full, deep, driving music. The kind of music that makes you want to step on the accelerator while driving through the mountains or pull a few negative g's in your aircraft of choice!
Did that make sense? lol

"cool. nice little montage...I think. Not a big Duke fan. I wonder if this was a short shown at the theatre prior to the main movie? Good quality considering the age of the peice."
it is quite amazing for 1935. and yes, is the answer. it also won an academy for best musical short.
note the non-racist portrayal of blacks. it was considered way ahead of it's time.
i am marveling at the film itself. it is an incredible document.

i have never seen Ferris Bueler.

How old are you Macro? How could anyone over the age of 20 and under the age of 70 NOT have watched Ferris Bueller?

That ranks right up there with not seeing Animal House.

Sakamoto has a very long and prestigious career in Japanese popular music, first with Yellow Magic Orchestra, and then as a solo artist. he is about as well known there as Paul Simon is in the US. a household name. he has done a lot of filmscore work, as well, i believe.
YMO has some amazing music. i love their cover of Tighten Up. rad.

Pink Floyd member Richard Wright dies at age 65

The Associated Press

LONDON - A Pink Floyd spokesman says founding member Richard Wright has died. He was 65.

Wright died Monday after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. His family did not want to give more details about his death. The spokesman is Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist.

Richard Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason at college and joined their early band Sigma 6.

Sigma 6 eventually became Pink Floyd and Wright wrote and sang some of the band's key songs. He wrote "The Great Gig In The Sky" and "Us And Them" from Pink Floyd's 1973 "The Dark Side Of The Moon."

He left the group in the early 1980s to form his own band but rejoined Pink Floyd for their 1987 album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason."

C'mon gang. Enough with politics. This thread is suppose to be about music without the politics! Let's not taint this thread. It's been so nice so far. JMHO.
Anyway, they've started airing the Amtrak Acela commercial again. I love the music in that commercial. The composer is Jon Wygens. He is based in London. Here's the link to his website. There are a few clips on the site.
Here is the commercial on the tube. I love the music and the feel of the commercial. The music really fits. From my research, the song is only the length of the commercial. Some composers write shorts specifically for commercials and they are not a snip from a full length tune.
Enjoy.

Then, imagine someone like James Earl Jones doing a voice over for your latest product launch or expansion. Heck, with that music, you could do your own voice over! I would have to rate those clips intellectual, mysterious, and captivating all at the same time. My kind of music. If you didn't read my previous post, this guy composed the Amtrak Acela commercial backround. Unfortunately, it's not on his playlist.

p.s. In my younger and vunerable days, I wanted to compose backround and chase scene music for Miami Vice! lol

I first played this beast back in 1967 when I was 13 years old. I still play it occasionally. This instrument was built by Norman & Beard of London & Norwich in 1905 and installed into the main concert chamber of the Wellington Town Hall (in NZ) in early 1906. The organ is completely original (as built, including the pneumatic action and original blowers) and has never been altered or rebuilt in any way. It had a lot of money spent restoring it in the mid-1980s and then received another restoration a couple of years ago, so is in superb condition.

This is the biggest musical instrument I have ever played. This massive pipe organ is in the main concert chamber of the Sydney Town Hall (Australia) and apart from one minor alteration (substituting a 1' stop in place of a 2' stop about five years after the instrument was built), it is also original as built by William Hill & Son (London) in the late-1880s.

This is the only trance I really like. This song brings memories of the Shape airshow in Belgium back in the '90's. There was a discotech playing this and I remember dancing for what seemed an eternity to an extended version of this song. This place was pretty huge as disco's go. Good memory. And yes, they still referred to them as "disco's"! lol

I love The Record. I have it on tape and vinyl. Some awesome musical abuse on that one & still one of the hardest of the hardcore as far as I can tell.
I'm probably asking a silly question but have you seen Decline of the Western Civilization Part I? I think Penelope Spheeris could have picked out better songs to film by the Germs than Annihilation Man & more footage of X would have been nice, but watching Fear close the show was definitely memorable.

Black Sabbath - War Pigs

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of deaths construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has sturck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
All right now!

OK, this is probably a little too far off the wall for most. But to those of us who grew up in the dance halls of south Texas 40 years ago or more, there was only one kind of music -- that strange blend of big band, country, and German/Czech Polka beats; and there was really only one performer who could pull it off -- Adolph Hofner.

Here ya go mac
Why don't you get back into bed
Reasons to be cheerful part 3

Summer, Buddy Holly, the working folly
Good golly Miss Molly and boats
Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet
Jump back in the alley and nanny goats
18-wheeler Scammels, Domenecker camels
All other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly, and porridge oats
A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it
You're welcome, we can spare it - yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty
Going on 40 - no electric shocks
The juice of the carrot, the smile of the parrot
A little drop of claret - anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, days when I ain't spotty,
Sitting on the potty - curing smallpox
Reasons to be cheerful part 3

Reasons to be cheerful part 3
Health service glasses
Gigolos and brasses
round or skinny bottoms
Take your mum to paris
lighting up the chalice

Harpo, Groucho, Chico
Cheddar cheese and pickle, the Vincent motorsickle
Slap and tickle
Woody Allen, Dali, Dimitri and Pasquale
balabalabala and Volare
Something nice to study, phoning up a buddy

Saying hokey-dokey, singalonga Smokey
Coming out of chokey

Massive attack imo crafted intelligent visionary pieces which changed the genre rather than complying with the norm of the period.

Yes.
I can't say all his output appeals to me but I do understand what he's about and I respect that.

ff- he is HORRIBLY inconsistent. but he is also totally amazing when he "hits it".
politically driven. innovative. passionate. eclectic.
that is a very "winning" combination for me.

But being "horribly inconsistant" is a defining characteristic of a curious exploratory mind. Never content to rest in a comfortable place.
I admire that, even if the result at the time jars with me. Sometimes others take the seed and go on to cultivate it.
Listen to some of his Maffia output then throw some Rage Against the Machine on for an example.

oh, absolutely. that and the Pop Group are obvious points of reference.
and i agree with you about the inconsistency part. it is hard to make an omlett without breaking a few eggs- and MS has broken many of them.
another think i like about him is his sabatticals. he will simply drift off for years, and then come back and make a record. and it is usually something completely different when he does. he gets bored, then he gets energized and creative.
i have a ton of respect for that. MS has influenced my writing a lot.
