here is a partial list of bands. i will fill in as i have time. i spent more time coordinating saturday's events than seeing shows this year.
wed
two star symphony; this is a post rock band with two violins, viola, cello, clarinet/sax, tuned percussion and drums. they play a noisy mix of stuff that borders on klezmer and straight ahead postrock. new group. all instrumental. no releases yet.
pivot m. takara 3 idiot pilot
i can't remember these bands. nothing spectacular here.
acid mother's temple
japanese psychedelic band that has been around for decades. it is hard to explain what they do. it is mostly organized music, but it is kindof like a jam band, too. so the pieces are wild, and open. lots of soloing and improvising, but around a basic structure. and it is very very well done. highly recommended.
thursday
the color turning my gold mask surrounded
again, can't remember these three bands.
man or astroman?
totally awesome. this is a surf band, but like a 60's sci fi film. funny, energetic, and totally awesome. i think this is one of the greatest unsigned acts in America. highly recommended.
friday
signals julianna barwick
juliana barwick is a vocal improviser that uses loops to form intricate coral arrangements as a solo artist. this is a lot trickier than it seems. it is hard to keep your voice in tune with itself when you do this many layers. she probably had 20-30 layers in her loops.
Aa
i kinda remember them. they were mostly electronics, very odd, and quite good.
Zs
this was my mindblower of sxsw. this band was a sax player, two guitarists and a drummer. they sat in a circle and played this music that sounded like total chaos. but without any visible cue, or auditory one, they would suddenly shift, and it would move to a different place. the drummer never opened his eyes. they never looked at each other. if it is done by counting, i can't even imagine that, because it sounds like complete chaos. i bought about $50 worth of product after the show, and told them that they blew my mind. recommended- but only if you like a good challenge.
balkan beat box
ok, this band totally rules. they are a balkan dance band from TelAviv. two sax players, bass, electronics, and drums. they are indescribably fun, energetic, and danceable. seriously amazing, and very highly recommended.
saturday
rice
hip hop- but really off kilter. like- thrash metal hiphop. pretty difficult, but entertaining.
rafter (3 shows)
rafter's show is really coming along. very entertaining. mostly dance music- but warped.
juiceboxxx
hip hop artist from NY? he just got a gig touring with Public Enemy. very high strung and energetic.
these are powers
they just keep getting better. this band is from Montreal, i believe. they are like a more electronic version of Selecter. very proggy, with charismatic and strong willed female vocalist.
ddmmyyyy
awesome. i have seen this band three times now, and they just keep getting better. this is prog/math rock- but it is not colorless and nerdy. it is way more visceral than that. innovative, challenging, and extremely tight. highly recommended.
dj spooky
NYC DJ with a very large reputation. if you like DJ work, this guy is dope.
