I love buttermilk. I gulp down half a gallon without blinking.
But, I hate to pay pharmacy prices for that stuff. The man charges more than twice the price than for regular milk.
Two days ago I bought half a gallon buttermilk and filled about a quarter gallon in an empty one gallon milk container. Added regular 2% milk to 3/4 of a gallon and shook it vigorously. Let it stand at room temperature for 24 hours. Back in the fridge. Now I have 3/4 gallon of delicious buttermilk.
I can even use the new concoction to make another batch, basically now for the price of regular milk.
No more pharmacy prices for buttermilk!

Am I too frugal?

Next challenge is sourdough from scratch for bread.

Your "weirdness" is one of your most endearing qualities, jab ~ :b ~ but have you ever considered the gamble you're taking of becoming very ill from drinking milk that has been left not-refrigerated for 24 hours IN FLORIDA? ~ :ey ~ and why are you buying buttermilk in a pharmacy? ~ it's very close to the same price as regular milk in grocery stores here ~

City folks! :hmm
Buttermilk is here more expensive, not always on the shelf, and usually only small containers.
I wanna gulp a gallon if I feel like it.
24 hours at room temp is just fine for the cultured buttermilk to grow within the reg milk.
First experiment successful. I'm feeling fine.

Ugh. My Dad loved buttermilk. That and cornbread could make a meal for him. Add something fried to the menu and he was in heaven. Did you know that it's lower in fat than sweet whole milk? :eek

I can't drink the stuff, but I LOVE the smell and I love using it in baking. Makes things nice and moist.

I can't believe you can't buy it at the grocery store. lol, even here in the Great White North, you can get a 1L of the stuff at the grocery store.

To make your own, here's a link. For one quart, you only need 4tbs of the buttermilk to the regular milk!! Scroll down the page. That will save you tons of money!!

Ok, the way I read it, is that the buttermilk already has that and you can get yogurt that has it too. Added to whole milk, it makes buttermilk without having to mix it in large quantities.

Sorry if I read it wrong, but I was just trying to help. :o :(

Just checked.
Half a gallon buttermilk 3.39
One gallon 2% milk 3.89

Buttermilk culture still working after who knows how many batches I made in the mean time. :happydance

Just now I got my turkey in the oven. It's turkey time tonight since I love to make my own and every year I barely get to enjoy it. Sooo, this year I'll eat the first batch tonight.
And tomorrow I have two invites for more turkey.
Mine's gonna be the best, of course!
