For me, bagels [good bagels] are an official category on the 'food pyramid' chart ~ my fav is onion pumpernickel ~

I was in Montreal maybe 10 years ago but don't remember if I had a bagel there ~ what is a 'Montreal-style bagel'? ~ my favorite bagel is the traditional Jewish-style bagel [the kind you find in real delis] ~ it is boiled for a few minutes before baking ~ so the crust is fairly crisp and the bread innards are chewy ~ I'm not a big fan of lox, but when I eat it I prefer Nova, which is less salty [and significantly more expensive] than belly ~

You answered your own question. [img]/domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif[/img]
Is that the same as "Manhattan-style"?

I'm not a big fan of lox

Try Scandinavian lox.

My guess is 'yes', oskar ~ I don't buy pre-packaged bagels anymore because I've never found one that compares to a real bagel ~ I either stop at the New York Bagel & Bialy Factory [which is owned/operated by Hispanics] or a Jewish-style deli [FTR, probably 50% of Jewish-style delis here are now owned/run by Greeks ~ Image] ~

Are you sure you don't live in Montreal?

Add a bit of raw onion to that bagel.

Raw red onion ~ and some chopped chives in the cream cheese ~

Sid, how is Canada responsible for the restaurant/food scene in Chicago?

You lose me with that one, oskar ~ I'm not a fan of liver in any form ~

My mother apparently makes excellent chopped liver ~ I can't personally confirm that because I refuse to eat it ~ but the rest of my family raves about her chopped liver ~ and for every family holiday dinner in the last several decades, she proudly announces "Susan, I made chopped liver for you" ~ she's not kidding ~  for some bizarro reason, she refuses to acknowledge or remember that I hate liver ~ but it's the thought that counts ... right? ~ Image
